Mount Sinai Partners with ETS-Lindgren to Address Adverse Environmental Effects on MRI Patient Care

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS, December 17, 2020 - Mount Sinai, comprised of several medical campuses throughout the New York City area, is renowned for its premier facilities delivering the highest level of patient care.  As with other major metropolitan areas, New York City presents significant environmental challenges to medical centers, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facilities.  Below Mount Sinai's Union Square location, for example, converging subway lines generate a high level of electromagnetic interference (EMI) that may adversely affect the imaging modalities produced by an MRI magnet.  EMI most commonly results in artifacts that obscure the images, creating the potential for improper patient diagnoses and treatments.  Subways, elevators, moving vehicles, magnetic navigation systems, and electrical distribution equipment, all of which are present at the Mount Sinai Union Square location, are common examples of environmental effects that may cause fluctuations in magnetic fields and generate EMI.

To address these environmental challenges, Mount Sinai, in partnership with ETS-Lindgren, incorporated Magnetic Active Compensation Systems (MACS) on its MRI systems several years ago to ensure Mount Sinai Union Square was able to utilize all available imaging options.  As a result of the MACS addition, Mount Sinai maintained its renowned high-quality care for all patients.  Fast-forward to 2020, when ETS-Lindgren upgraded the Mount Sinai Union Square New York location's MACS to the latest generation MACS/D

ETS-Lindgren's MACS/D is a tri-axial magnetic field compensator designed to attenuate environmental magnetic fields adversely affecting the image quality of MRIs and other imaging modalities.  Incorporating patented ACR technology, the MACS/D provides higher compensation at the magnet's isocenter than other active compensation systems, with effective shielding factors at isocenter of up to 350.  Additionally, the MACS/D high-efficiency, low-dissipation coil-driver amplifier ensures long-term system reliability at sites with frequent high-level interfering field levels, such as those found at Mount Sinai Union Square.

"The new MACS/D is on a digital platform that enables superior imaging as well as flexibility for future product enhancements," said Joel Kellogg, ETS-Lindgren's Director of Business Development for Healthcare, Industry, and Government.  "In the case of Mount Sinai Union Square, the MACS/D provided a higher level of performance, delivering incremental improvements to the electromagnetic environment and ensuring the continued high quality of MRI images.  In addition, the MACS/D's upgraded software utilizes networking capabilities to monitor system performance, as well as the capability for remote diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair."

The upgrade to the MACS/D places Mount Sinai Union Square on the latest platform contributing to its superior patient care.  Tara Osterlof, Radiology Administrator with Mount Sinai Union Square, enthused, "With the recent upgrade, our staff appreciated the password-protected access to MACS/D standard and advanced operational parameters.  The VPN client support ensured secure remote data logging and diagnostics, which is especially important these days.  We can also easily download future software upgrades, which is very convenient and extends the value of our upgrade."

As an industry leader with over 100 high-performance MACS MRI installations worldwide, introduction of the latest generation MACS/D system prominently advances ETS-Lindgren to sourcing the world's foremost active compensation system, specifically tailored for MRI sites.  The MACS/D is compatible with all magnets, from 0.2T to 3T and higher, superconducting or resistive.  Learn more about the MACS/D upgrade at Mount Sinai Union Square in the case study found here.
