Northeastern University Innovation Campus Opens Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aerial System Flight Facility

ETS-Lindgren Chamber Facilitates Drone Performance R&D

CEDAR PARK, Texas July 18, 2019   Northeastern University Innovation Campus held a grand opening recently to showcase their new Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Flight Facility, the result of the Kostas Institute Partnership in Counter UAS Technology.  The institute is the home for co-located industry and academic research labs working together to accelerate innovation related to resilience and security.  Representatives from the US Air Force Research Lab and Hanscom Air Force Base as well as the US Naval Research Lab discussed the significance of the unique UAS Flight Facility at the grand opening.  To ensure the facility would produce cutting edge research and development, management at Northeastern University contacted the experts at ETS-Lindgren.  Northeastern University valued ETS-Lindgren's decades of experience in chamber design and construction, program management, and logistics coordination.  Using the company's in-house and certified Building Information Modeling (BIM) team for the chamber design, ETS-Lindgren manufactured, installed and integrated a fully-functional UAS Flight Facility.

The RF shielded anechoic chamber with nominal interior dimensions of 15 m x 14 m x 6 m (50 ft x 48 ft x 21 ft), is part of an indoor drone (in-flight) test facility at the Kostas Research Institute UAS Lab in Burlington, Massachusetts. The chamber is fully lined with microwave absorber material and features two large access doors that allow Northeastern University to fly drones between the shielded chamber and a protected outdoor flight test area.  A large support frame located on the chamber ceiling supports the mounting of antennas as required.

ETS-Lindgren provided a turn-key chamber, including a large fully-automatic electro pneumatic sliding RF-shielded equipment door, 3 m x 3 m (10 ft x 10 ft), a dual leaf door and an RF shielded personnel door.

For far-field antenna pattern measurement testing, ETS-Lindgren provided Model 2115CR multi access positioner system and industry leading EMQuest EMQ-100 Antenna Measurement Software.  The software offers a wide range of fully parameterized test methods for measuring basic antenna performance metrics as well as testing both radiated and conducted performance of various wireless devices.  High performance RF microwave absorber, Model EHP-18, lines the chamber walls and ceiling with removable absorber provided for the floor. For high power drone susceptibility testing, the chamber features an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generator and radiation line.   All accessories, such as connector panels, RF filters, viewing windows, etc. were provided to complete the chamber.  For more information on the Northeastern University's new Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Flight Facility, click here.
