GLENDALE HEIGHTS, IL, June 1, 2009 - By combining RF shielding expertise with biomagnetic investigation, Elekta and ETS-Lindgren developed a Light Magnetically Shielded Room (LMSR) concept. This room features a unique double eddy current shield with a dual low frequency magnetic shield. The magnetic system is interleaved with the RF system to provide superior RF/magnetic shielding performance.
As research into the human brain and what stimulates it grows, so does the need for imaging equipment such as Magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems. Biomagnetic fields are almost a billion times weaker than the earth's magnetic field, so they require a high performance LMSR to shield out the broad spectrum of everyday RF and magnetic interference. These LMSRs allow MEG systems to detect these weak fields in the presence of much stronger environmental magnetic and RF fields.
ETS-Lindgren was recently subcontracted by Elekta for the installations of two LMSRs in the United States – at the Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee and at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Both rooms feature ETS-Lindgren's manually operated RF/magnetic shielded swing door. The door also features a flip-up door threshold to eliminate the gap in the floor, allowing for a smooth transition into and out of the LMSR. Both sites are also benefitting from the standard LMSR features: custom interior and exterior finishes, ceiling mounted equipment, demountable construction, interior lighting, electric filters, and a degaussing feature.
As Ben Turner, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ETS-Lindgren says, “Biomagnetic investigation is an exciting field in medicine and will continue to grow due to new developments in the technology used to determine brain stimulants. We are excited and pleased to be able to offer leading-edge shielding technology to help this field become more advanced and uncover more clues to human biology.”
ETS-Lindgren is an international manufacturer of MRI shielding systems and offers worldwide service and support. With extensive capabilities in MRI shielding, ETS-Lindgren can assist with project engineering, installation, testing, and continuing service. ETS-Lindgren offers shielding, shielded doors, shielded windows, monolithic flooring, LED lighting and ferromagnetic detection systems. Long-term image quality is ensured by using reliable construction methods such as copper and aluminum shielding, integrated RF/magnetic shielding and silicon-based construction.
Headquartered in Cedar Park, Texas, ETS-Lindgren has manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe, and Asia.
